This is the first web site in English about walking in Extremadura, Spain, especially in the northern province, Cáceres, where I live.

Here you will find:

  1. regularly written up walks and routes

  2. maps

  3. GPS points to locate walks accurately

  4. information on walking in Extremadura

  5. a lot of photography to tempt you here

  6. a few historical notes on the routes

  7. where to stay

  8. changing pages and updates

Walking Extremadura will show you the beauty of walking in this area - and not just walking. This is also the place for painters, flower lovers, bird watchers, photographers, animal lovers, people who love beauty and people who love history. That’s before we start on about lovers of good food and relaxed and enjoyable company. You will find all that and more.

I’m launching these pages for two reasons. First, to share my love of walking where I have chosen to live. Second, to provide information in English about this wonderful location.

I hope the site provides sufficient insight into the walking opportunities in this little known and unspoiled area. If it tempts you to be walking Extremadura yourself, then so much the better.

To navigate this site use the horizontal menu bar under the masthead at the top. Walks can be accessed quickly directly from the map page. The site has been made simple so that all of us spend less time on the computer and more time walking. I have my boots on, ready, as I write.

On Sunday a group of us walked up the Cancho Blanco in the Sierra de Montánchez. The day started cold but warmed up quickly and the air was clear. A great day to climb from 308m to 947m and we did it in 2.5 hours. Gosh! We must be fit! On the way down we went via the Cerro San Cristobal - just because it was there and just because it was a great walking day. At the end of the six hours we felt pretty pleased with ourselves. Sunday dinner was just that bit more welcome. It might only be February but Spring has come to the Sierra with the first almond blossoms.

Happy walking! • Updated 01.02.2012

It’s about Walking in Extremadura!

We seem to be getting noticed ...

When I started this site, just over three years ago, it was mainly for my own amusement. However, as my love of walking here has grown, so the site has developed into what is now the world’s number one English language site for walking in Extremadura. I get many questions about routes and walking here from all over Europe, especially from the UK, The Netherlands and Germany. I answer everyone.

This Autumn the quarterly magazine ‘Caudal de Extremadura’ has run a whole page feature on walkingextremadura.com. It’s very complimentary which is reassuring in a nice way. Now if only I could get the time to post the 16 new walks waiting in my

in-tray ... but I seem to be too busy ... busy walking!

Apparently someone has put a link to this site on FaceBook as well. I’m not on FaceBook - I don’t seem to get the time for it - but you can contact me via the walkingextremadura@live.com link.

Saludos to you all,
